ATBU Disowns Alleged Alumni Over Disruption of Senate Hearing on University Law Amendment

The management of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has distanced itself from individuals alleged to have disrupted a Senate public hearing on the proposed amendment of the university’s establishing law, describing them as impostors and not graduates of the institution.

In a press release issued by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, ATBU reacted to reports surrounding the public hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund on a bill seeking to amend the university’s status from a Science and Technology–based institution to a conventional university.

The bill was sponsored by the Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Buba. The public hearing commenced on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at about 2:00 p.m., but was adjourned following a disruption allegedly caused by a group of youths who claimed to be alumni of ATBU.

According to the university, several media reports identified the individuals as graduates of ATBU, a claim the institution has firmly rejected.

“The university wishes to categorically dissociate itself from the actions of these individuals,” the statement said, stressing that those involved were not products of ATBU. The institution emphasized its long-standing reputation for producing disciplined graduates who have served as credible ambassadors of the university both within Nigeria and internationally for over four decades.

ATBU further stated that it is confident its genuine alumni would not engage in conduct capable of disrespecting the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or undermining a formal legislative process.

While expressing regret over the disruption that led to the adjournment of the hearing, the university urged stakeholders to exercise caution in dealing with individuals who claim to represent ATBU or its alumni body in future engagements.

The statement was signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Zailani Bappa.
