David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) has recorded a significant milestone in its clinical training expansion efforts as the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics successfully underwent a one-day accreditation assessment by the Dietitians Association of Nigeria (DAN), paving the way for the commencement of dietetic internship training.

The assessment was conducted in line with DAN’s established accreditation standards for institutions seeking approval to host internship programmes for dietetics training.

The exercise, which evaluated infrastructure, personnel capacity, and training readiness, is a critical step toward final approval for internship commencement at the facility.

Speaking during the visit, the Chief Medical Director of DUFUTH, Prof. Uzoma Agwu, expressed confidence in the institution’s preparedness and commitment to meeting all required standards and carrying capacity expectations.

She noted that the hospital has consistently demonstrated responsiveness to accreditation requirements, emphasizing management’s willingness to implement all recommendations made by the visiting team.

Prof. Agwu also reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to continuous staff development, training, and retraining, and directed the Acting Director and Head of Human Resources Management to issue promotion letters to qualified staff within the department.

In recognition of the department’s performance and readiness, the CMD also announced the provision of several support items, including a television set, a VIP office chair, a refrigerator, and a promised installation of an overhead water tank.

The President of the Dietitians Association of Nigeria, Prof. Olivia Afam-Anene, explained that the purpose of the visit was to assess the department’s preparedness to commence internship training, focusing on compliance with required standards and availability of essential facilities.

She noted that the team’s objective was not punitive but evaluative, aimed at ensuring that the institution is adequately equipped for effective intern training.

The accreditation team recommended key improvements, including the provision of a fully functional therapeutic kitchen with running water to support practical training requirements.

The Head of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dtn. Ezeji Obianuju, expressed appreciation to the hospital management and staff for their support, noting that the successful outcome of the accreditation exercise reflects collective effort and commitment.

She added that full accreditation would expand training opportunities for aspiring dietitians and strengthen the quality of nutrition and dietetics services within DUFUTH.
