The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has qualified for the semi-final stage of the Invitational 5-a-Side Monieball Competition, reaffirming its strong culture of sportsmanship and youth development.

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has qualified for the semi-final stage of the Invitational 5-a-Side Monieball Competition, reaffirming its strong culture of sportsmanship and youth development.

The tournament, hosted by the University of Ibadan (UI), ran from Wednesday, October 15 to Friday, October 17, 2025, and featured eight universities drawn from across Nigeria.

FUNAAB competed in Group B alongside the University of Ibadan (UI), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), and the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE). After a series of intense and entertaining matches, FUNAAB and UI secured the top two positions in their group, earning a place in the semi-finals.

The next stage of the competition will see them face Group A qualifiers — the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and the University of Calabar (UNICAL) — in the semi-final playoffs scheduled for next Wednesday at UNICAL.

The FUNAAB team, praised for its discipline and unity, was led by the Director of Sports, Dr. Samuel Olabanji, with support from Chief Sports Coaches Mr. Lawrence Odumbo and Mrs. Gladys Ochu. Other key members of the contingent included Mrs. Omotayo Akomolafe (Chief Nursing Officer) and Mr. Eniola Akinrinlola (Contingent Driver).

Dr. Olabanji expressed pride in the team’s performance, describing their qualification as “a reflection of FUNAAB’s holistic approach to education — one that prioritises both academic excellence and physical development.” He also commended the University Management for its consistent support of sports initiatives.

Among the highlights of the event was the presentation of ₦50,000 to Ilori Gbenga, a 500-Level PRM student, who won the Best Player Award, while Dr. Olabanji received two branded Monieball footballs in recognition of his outstanding leadership and the team’s exemplary participation.

The grand finale of the Monieball Tournament will be held in Lagos, where the top finalists will battle for the championship title.
