FUTA Alumnus, Olaoluwa Dolapo Idowu, Champions Community Development in Lagos with Waste-to-Energy Summit
Olaoluwa Dolapo Idowu, a FUTA alumnus and NYSC member in Lagos, led a successful Waste-to-Energy Summit on July 17, 2024, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos State.
Olaoluwa Dolapo Idowu, an alumnus of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) and current NYSC member in Lagos, has spearheaded a significant Community Development Service (CDS) project culminating in the successful Waste-to-Energy Summit held on July 17, 2024, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos State.
The summit, themed "Driving Environmental Sustainability and Empowering a Sustainable Future," addressed the pressing environmental issues surrounding the Olusosun Landfill. Key topics included health hazards, environmental pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the economic implications for local businesses. The event brought together industry experts, policymakers, and community members to discuss sustainable waste management practices and the potential benefits of a waste-to-energy facility in Lagos.
Olaoluwa's initiative, executed in collaboration with Rack Centre, a leading Tier III Data Centre in West Africa, emphasized environmental and social sustainability. The summit featured prominent figures such as the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources for Lagos State, the Managing Director of LAWMA, the Director General of NESREA, representatives from Elektron Energies, and the NYSC Lagos State Coordinator.

The project was not a solo effort; Olaoluwa was supported by a dedicated team of corps members, many of whom are also FUTA alumni from the Physics Department, including Louis Adedipe, Jeremiah Okenye, Richard Ayejina, Winner Bamgboye, and Israel Kolade. Their invaluable contributions were crucial to the success of the summit. Additionally, Professor E.O Ogolo from the Department of Physics at FUTA was a distinguished speaker, further highlighting the university's contribution to producing top-tier professionals.
