Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, represented by the State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Inuwa Adamu, has lauded the contributions of serving corps members to the development of the state. The commendation was made during the opening ceremony of the mandatory three-week orientation camp held at Amada in Akko Local Government Area on Friday.
A total of 1,674 corps members, including 903 males and 771 females, were registered for the orientation camp. Governor Yahaya expressed his appreciation for the corps members' selfless service, which he noted has significantly impacted the health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors in the state.
“The selfless service of corps members has significantly contributed to the developmental strides in the health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors of the economy,” Yahaya said. “I can confidently say that the scheme remains a valuable instrument of development, and it is my ardent hope that you will join in this rewarding journey of nation-building.”
The governor urged the corps members to maintain peace during their orientation and as they prepare for postings in various communities across the state. He encouraged them to embrace their diverse cultural and socio-ethnic backgrounds, promoting national unity.
“The future of this country lies in your hands; therefore, you have a crucial role to play in shaping our collective destiny. Do not squander this unique opportunity that will allow you to rise to greater heights and secure a sustainable future,” he added.
Governor Yahaya also advised the corps members to acquire additional skills beyond their academic qualifications. “You may not see the benefits immediately, but it will become an added advantage for you in the wider world. Note that your degree is rarely sufficient these days, so it is essential to have additional skills to enhance your profile,” he said.
He assured the corps members that the state government is committed to creating an enabling environment for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to thrive.
In her address, State NYSC Coordinator Chinwe Nwachuku praised the corps members for their conduct since the commencement of camp activities. She wished them a “hitch-free orientation course and, by extension, a fruitful, peaceful, and fulfilling service year.”
