Igbinedion University, Okada, has hosted its inaugural TEDx event, marking a significant step in its push for intellectual engagement, innovation, and leadership development within the academic community.

The event, held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, took place at the University Library Conference Hall and brought together students, academics, innovators, and thought leaders under the theme “Beyond the Shores of Mediocrity.” The gathering focused on challenging conventional thinking and promoting purpose-driven leadership and innovation.
Delivering the keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, PhD, FAS, spoke on the theme “Digital Intelligence: Leveraging Technology Without Losing Depth.” He cautioned against overdependence on technology at the expense of critical thinking, creativity, and human depth, stressing that true progress must balance innovation with intellectual integrity.
Other speakers included Chinenye Ebele Onuorah, who shared a personal narrative on transformational leadership drawn from her NYSC experience in a rural Cross River community through the Regalo Hope Foundation. She highlighted how grassroots challenges can be converted into lasting social impact through commitment and innovation.

Also featured were Ambassador Dr. Smily Mukta and Chisom Rutherford, both of whom emphasized leadership as an active responsibility rooted in problem-solving, discipline, and stepping outside comfort zones.
Across the sessions, speakers consistently reinforced a central message: leadership is not theoretical—it is demonstrated through action, resilience, and a refusal to accept mediocrity as a standard.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to producing a new generation of ethically grounded, innovative, and solution-oriented graduates, noting that platforms such as TEDx are critical in shaping global-ready thinkers.

The event closed on a forward-looking note, with participants encouraged to translate ideas into action and drive meaningful change within their communities and professions.
