Lens Polytechnic Students Shift To Solution-Based Research, Construct Mobile Solar Generator

Students from the Department of Computer Engineering, Lens Polytechnic Offa, have invented a mobile solar generator capable of powering electrical appliances at home and in offices.

The invention, which is a final year project, was supervised by Mr. Adetunji Mubarak and Mr. Nasif Yusuf Agbolahan of the Computer Engineering Department.

One of the inventors, Akintunde Jamal with matriculation number 24/ND/CET/C/111, said the solar generator consists of a 1000W circuit inverter, a 1200W solar panel and four 12-volt batteries.

"The solar panel charges the battery, and the inverter converts the stored DC power into AC power for household appliances," he said.

"The generator has a 1000W capacity that can power light, fan, television, laptop and other small electrical appliances. The limitation is that it cannot power electrical appliances that exceed 1000W total load, such as electrical irons, electrical kettles, large air conditioners, and other heavy appliances. It can power 1 TV, three LED bulbs, 2 fans, 1 laptop, and several phone chargers all together conveniently."

“The backup time depends on how the batteries are fully charged. With the four batteries fully charged, the solar generator can last from 6 to 7 hours,” he noted.

Reacting to the development, the Proprietor, Dr. Azeez Yisa FCA, on behalf of the management, commended the students for the invention. While appreciating the supervisors, he urged the researchers to shift attention to solution-based research for technological advancement.

Also speaking, the Rector, Dr. Mrs. M.B. Aliyu, applauded the students for the innovation. She lauded the supervisors for their tutelage and mentorship throughout the project.

“I applaud the students for this innovation and equally commend the management for creating an enabling environment for teaching, learning, and research,” she said.
