MOUAU VC Charges New SUG Executives to Promote Unity, Tackle Cultism and Examination Malpractice

The Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, has charged the newly inaugurated 32nd Students’ Union Government (SUG) Executive Council to promote unity, uphold discipline, and provide purposeful leadership that advances students’ welfare and protects the image of the University.

Professor Akanwa gave the charge during the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of the 2026/2027 SUG Executive Council, where she described the student leaders as a critical link between the student body and the University Management.

She urged the new executives to maintain effective communication with the University through the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs to ensure that students’ concerns are addressed promptly and amicably.

Reaffirming her administration’s open-door policy, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged constructive engagement and dialogue while cautioning against unlawful protests, confrontational actions, and activities capable of disrupting the peaceful academic environment of the institution.

Professor Akanwa also called on the student leaders to take a firm stand against cultism, examination malpractice, vandalism, drug abuse, and other forms of misconduct. She stressed that the executives must lead by example through integrity, good character, accountability, and selfless service.

She commended the outgoing 31st SUG Executive Council for its contributions to the University and challenged the new leadership to distinguish itself through innovation, inclusiveness, and a strong commitment to improving students’ welfare.

As part of efforts to enhance students' living conditions, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the University Management had concluded plans to commence the phased renovation of students’ hostels during the long vacation. She also urged students to maintain a clean environment, protect University facilities, and complete their course registration within the approved timeframe.

In his remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Ralph Iheke, described leadership as a responsibility rooted in service rather than personal interest. He reminded the newly inaugurated executives that the Students’ Union Government exists to serve the student community while safeguarding the reputation of the University.

Professor Iheke also encouraged members of the outgoing executive council to support and mentor the new leadership to ensure a successful and impactful tenure.

The inauguration and swearing-in ceremony, held on Wednesday, officially marked the commencement of the tenure of the 2026/2027 32nd Students’ Union Government Executive Council of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
