NANS Demands Removal of Vice Chancellors Over Alleged Fee Increases Sabotaging Student Loan Scheme

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a strong statement calling for the dismissal of certain Vice Chancellors who are allegedly planning unjustified hikes in tuition and other fees. NANS claims these increases are aimed at undermining the effective implementation of the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme, which seeks to ease financial burdens on students and their families.

In a press release from NANS Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde, the organization expressed its concern over plans by some Vice Chancellors that contradict President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for accessible education through the Student Loan Scheme. Babatunde highlighted the scheme's purpose, stating, “This student loan scheme was meant to offer relief to students and their families by addressing the financial constraints faced by many Nigerian students in accessing quality education.”

Instead of supporting the initiative, the accused Vice Chancellors are allegedly pursuing fee increases that could deter students from taking advantage of the loan scheme. Babatunde condemned these actions, describing them as insensitive and a deliberate attempt to sabotage the future of Nigerian students.

NANS has urged President Tinubu to investigate what they term an “anti-student agenda” and to take decisive action against the Vice Chancellors involved. “Any such move to inflate fees under the guise of institutional development or financial constraints is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Nigerian student body,” he asserted.

Furthermore, NANS has called upon all Nigerians, including parents and education stakeholders, to join in opposing these fee hikes, emphasizing that education should remain affordable and accessible rather than being exploited for profit.

The association remains committed to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian students and ensuring that the Student Loan Scheme is implemented effectively without unnecessary obstacles.
