NIMSA Hosts 10th Regional Convention at LAUTECH
The Nigerian Medical Students Association (NIMSA) Southwest Region held its 10th regional convention at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, from September 12th to 15th. Themed "The 21st Century Medical Student: The NEXUS," the event focused on integrating academics with entrepreneurship and politics.
The Nigerian Medical Students Association (NIMSA) Southwest Region convened for its 10th regional convention from September 12th to 15th at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State. Themed "The 21st Century Medical Student: The NEXUS," the convention aimed to enhance students' engagement in academics, entrepreneurship, and politics.
Keynote speakers included Dr. Afolayan Babatunde, Immediate Past Chairman of Medical Advisory at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital and President of Inward Emmanuel Health Care Ltd., who emphasized the importance of time management and innovation. Dr. Babatunde encouraged students to balance their academic workload with other activities, suggesting that resilience and multitasking are crucial for success.
Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Kayode Olamide Simidele Valentine addressed the impact of brain drain on Nigeria’s medical sector. He highlighted the need for improved security, fair remuneration, and better working conditions to retain medical professionals. Dr. Valentine noted that "pull factors" from abroad and "push factors" within Nigeria contribute to the migration of doctors, urging the government to address these issues.
Gbadamosi J O, Chairman of Megida Charity Foundation, delivered a goodwill message, urging students to stay focused on academics while also engaging in entrepreneurship and politics to build the nation.
Sidiq Taofeek Shola, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and a 500-level student at LAUTECH, appreciated the efforts of the guest speakers, organizing committee, and attendees. He encouraged students to broaden their horizons beyond academics by exploring entrepreneurship and political involvement.
The convention featured various activities including inter-school quizzes, debates, sports competitions, award ceremonies, and networking opportunities. Attendee Alao Ayomide Omoshola commended the organizers for providing an informative and engaging platform for medical students to network and learn.
