OAU Muslim Community Commends Bamire’s Reforms, Seeks Approval of Hijab at International School

The Muslim community of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has commended the administration of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, for what it described as significant improvements in staff welfare, infrastructure, and campus administration, while also calling for the approval of hijab use at the OAU International School.

The Muslim community of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has commended the administration of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, for what it described as significant improvements in staff welfare, infrastructure, and campus administration, while also calling for the approval of hijab use at the OAU International School.

The commendation and request were made during a special Juma’at prayer held at the university’s Central Mosque as part of activities marking the institution’s anniversary celebrations.

The event was attended by members of the university management, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the Bursar, and the University Librarian, alongside Muslim faithful who participated in prayers, thanksgiving, intercessions, and reflections on the university’s development.

In his sermon, Professor Makinde praised the Bamire-led administration for addressing long-standing issues related to staff promotions and for improving the physical outlook of the university campus.

“There was a time when staff members were not promoted as and when due, but the story has changed significantly under Professor Bamire’s leadership,” he said. “The university has witnessed visible progress both administratively and physically, and the Muslim community appreciates these efforts.”

Responding, Vice-Chancellor Professor Bamire expressed appreciation to the Muslim community for its continued support since he assumed office, describing it as a key pillar of peace, stability, and institutional progress.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Muslim alumni to the development of the university, noting that members of the community had collectively funded projects worth billions of naira, including student accommodation and research facilities.

The Chief Imam of the university, Professor Abubakar Abefe Sanusi, later offered prayers for the institution and its leadership. The gathering also served as a platform for the Muslim community to renew its request for approval of hijab use at the OAU International School.

Presenting the appeal, Professor Makinde urged the Vice-Chancellor to facilitate resolution of the matter, describing it as an important religious concern for Muslim students and parents.

The special prayer session formed part of activities marking OAU’s anniversary celebrations, highlighting both institutional achievements and ongoing community engagements within the university.
