Ondo State Begins Digitalisation of Secondary Education, Trains Teachers and Students Across Public Schools

Ondo State has commenced the digitalisation of secondary education by training teachers and students while equipping 50 public secondary schools with computer facilities to boost digital literacy and 21st-century learning.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, disclosed this during the grand finale of the 4th Digital Quiz Competition for Secondary Schools held in Akure.
The competition, organised by the Ondo State Government in partnership with Quickens Computer Limited, formed part of the state's broader strategy to strengthen digital education and equip students with 21st-century skills.
Speaking at the event, Ajibefun said the state government has made digital education a top priority, noting that teachers have been undergoing intensive training since last year as part of preparations for the digital transformation of secondary education
According to him, ICT teachers from public secondary schools recently completed a week-long digital education training programme facilitated by the ministry and its technical partners
"The state government is investing heavily in digital education, with the training of our teachers and students in preparation for the digitalisation of our education system. The training is a continuous process," he said.
He explained that although teachers are the direct beneficiaries of the training, students will ultimately gain from the programme as educators transfer the knowledge and digital skills acquired in the classroom.
Ajibefun also revealed that the government has begun equipping schools with digital infrastructure to support effective teaching and learning.
He disclosed that, about three weeks earlier, one of the state's technical partners collaborated with the Ministry of Education to supply computer equipment to 50 public secondary schools across Ondo State.
The initiative, he noted, is aimed at ensuring that schools are adequately prepared for the digitalisation programme and can provide students with hands-on experience using modern technology.
The commissioner described the Digital Quiz Competition as a strategic initiative designed to encourage academic excellence while promoting digital literacy among secondary school students.
He said the government recognises that technology, innovation and digital knowledge are now essential tools for national development and future career success.
"The world is rapidly evolving into a digital society where knowledge, innovation and technological skills have become indispensable tools for national development," Ajibefun stated.
He added that the competition was created not only to encourage healthy rivalry among schools but also to inspire students to become creators, innovators and future technology leaders rather than merely consumers of digital tools.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Akindele Ige, said the Digital Quiz Competition serves as a platform for nurturing creativity, critical thinking, innovation and digital competence among young learners.
According to him, initiatives like the competition are helping to equip students with the knowledge, values and technological skills needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
Several schools participated in the competition, including Fiwasaye Girls' Secondary School, Akure, Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, and Greater Tomorrow Secondary School, Arigidi Akoko, alongside other secondary schools across the state.
The Ondo State Government says it remains committed to expanding digital education through continuous teacher training, improved ICT infrastructure and innovative learning programmes that will prepare students for future academic and career opportunities.
