Engr. Razaq Obe, the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources in Ondo State, has emphasized the importance of developing transportation networks and energy infrastructure to bolster Nigeria's economy. He made this assertion during the 11th Annual Lecture of the School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS) at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), held on September 13, 2024.
Speaking on the theme “Harnessing Energy and Mineral Resources for Sustained Economic Growth and Inclusive Development in Nigeria,” Obe highlighted that with appropriate strategies and policies, the nation can transform its energy and mineral resources into engines of prosperity. He advocated for economic diversification, value addition, industrialization, and the development of renewable energy sources as essential steps toward sustainable growth.
The Commissioner noted that the solid minerals sector, which includes mining for gold, lithium, and rare earth minerals, could become significant revenue streams for Nigeria. He stressed that investment in refining petrochemicals and mineral processing industries is critical, suggesting that such efforts would create jobs, stimulate local industries, and reduce the country's reliance on imports.
"Good governance and transparency are crucial for the effective management of Nigeria's energy and mineral resources," Obe stated. He urged the government to invest in critical infrastructure and prioritize policy reforms that foster a conducive environment for growth in these sectors.
In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Taiwo Amos, underscored the correlation between energy consumption and economic development. She noted that countries with higher energy consumption per capita often experience improved standards of living.
