Speaking to the graduating class on May 6, Winfrey disclosed that it took her more than ten years to complete her college education, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and determination.

Winfrey shared that she did not receive a diploma from the institution when she initially enrolled in 1975. Despite her burgeoning career in broadcast journalism, she was just one credit away from obtaining her degree. The turning point came ten years later when she decided to return to Tennessee State University to complete the studies she had started.

Reflecting on her journey, Winfrey stated, "I graduated from Tennessee State when I won my third Emmy," highlighting her accomplishments in the field of journalism, which includes 12 NAACP Image Awards, one Tony Award, and 19 Emmy Awards.
