Senate Leader Pledges ₦1 Billion Research Grant for New Ekiti Varsity

Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has committed ₦200 million annually over the next five years to support research at the newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin-Ekiti. 

The ₦1 billion total pledge aims to transform the institution into a world-class research hub for innovation and technological advancement. 

Key Highlights from the Maiden Matriculation

The announcement was made during the university's first matriculation ceremony on February 27, 2026, where 1,564 pioneer students were formally admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Financial Support for Students: Senator Bamidele donated over ₦31 million, providing ₦20,000 in cash to each matriculating student alongside essential foodstuffs, including rice and yam.

Infrastructure & Logistics: To facilitate a smooth takeoff, the Senator previously donated two Coaster buses, a Toyota Hilux, an ambulance, and motorcycles to the university management.

Academic Expansion: While FUTES currently operates four faculties, Bamidele revealed plans to add three more faculties, including Medicine, as the university transitions to its permanent site.

Disciplinary Standards: Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gbenga Aribisala warned students that the university maintains zero tolerance for drug abuse, sexual misconduct, and cultism. 

Institutional Impact

The establishment of FUTES is a "community and personal dream" facilitated by Bamidele and approved by President Bola Tinubu in February 2025. The institution is strategically positioned to bridge skill gaps in robotics, cybersecurity, and data science.
