The University of Ilorin has endorsed the English–Yoruba Qur’an Translation 4-in-1 Project authored by Dr Dauda Awwal, describing it as a significant contribution to Qur’anic studies, translation, Islamic scholarship, and Yoruba intellectual development.
The project, which took more than two decades to complete, began in 2004 and was concluded in 2026 following years of translation, research, revision, consultation, and textual analysis.
Its unique 4-in-1 format combines the original Arabic Qur’anic text, Romanised transliteration, Yoruba translation, and English translation in a single resource, enabling readers to engage with the Qur’an across multiple languages.
In his scholarly foreword, Dr Aliy Abdulwahid Adebisi, Associate Professor of Translation and Arabic Studies at the University of Ilorin and National President of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters, NITI, described the work as a valuable multilingual scholarly and educational resource.
He commended Dr Awwal’s intellectual commitment and perseverance, noting that Qur’anic translation requires careful attention to language, context, meaning, and cultural differences.
The project also contributes to the preservation and development of Yoruba as a language of Islamic intellectual expression while building on the existing tradition of Yoruba Qur’anic translations.
According to the project’s foreword, the work incorporates relevant references to Hadith and other Islamic scholarly sources, making it potentially useful to students, researchers, educators, and readers interested in Qur’anic studies.
The University of Ilorin’s endorsement further highlights the importance of indigenous African languages in the transmission of religious knowledge and academic scholarship.
The English–Yoruba Qur’an Translation 4-in-1 Project is expected to stimulate further research and scholarly engagement in Qur’anic studies, translation, Arabic, Yoruba, and African Islamic intellectual history.
