UNIMED Calls for Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration to Advance Medical and Scientific Research

University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has called for stronger interdisciplinary collaboration to drive scientific innovation, research excellence, and improved healthcare delivery.

The university made this known during its Fourth Postgraduate School Interdisciplinary Discourse, where academics, researchers, and postgraduate scholars gathered to examine the theme: "Synergy in Science: Transforming Medical, Health and Scientific Outcomes through an Interdisciplinary Culture."

The event focused on the importance of collaborative research in addressing complex global health and scientific challenges, while encouraging scholars to move beyond traditional academic boundaries to develop practical and sustainable solutions.

Delivering the keynote address, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of UNIMED, Prof. Roseangela Nwuba, stated that the complexity of today's scientific problems has made interdisciplinary collaboration an essential component of modern research.

According to her, as scientific challenges become increasingly sophisticated, there is a greater need for experts from different fields to combine their knowledge, skills, and perspectives.

Prof. Nwuba noted that scientific excellence in the 21st century is no longer measured solely by individual expertise but by researchers' ability to collaborate across disciplines and institutions to produce innovative and impactful solutions.

She explained that fostering a culture of collaboration would significantly improve research productivity, accelerate scientific discoveries, and ensure that research outcomes are translated into practical solutions that benefit society.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Ebunoluwa  Adejuyigbe, described the discourse as another reflection of the university's unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and the advancement of knowledge capable of addressing critical health and developmental issues.

She observed that the theme of the discourse was both timely and relevant, considering the increasingly complex health and scientific problems confronting the world.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, such challenges can no longer be effectively tackled within the limits of a single discipline, making collaboration among professionals from diverse fields indispensable.

 "The future belongs to institutions and researchers who embrace collaboration, integrate diverse perspectives and harness collective expertise to generate impactful solutions," she said.

Participants at the discourse unanimously agreed that strengthening interdisciplinary partnerships among scholars is essential for advancing scientific knowledge, improving healthcare outcomes, and developing evidence-based solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing modern society.

The event concluded with renewed calls for universities, researchers, and policymakers to continue promoting interdisciplinary research as a catalyst for innovation, sustainable development, and improved public health.
