A 15-year-old optional school student, Ebube Offo, has allegedly committed suicide after drinking a substance affirmed to be sniper insecticide in Enugu State. 

Ebube, who hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state, was said to have ended his own life after the administration of his new school, Malex International School, situated at No 2A, Niger Close Uwani Enugu, expelled him over allegations of a sexual assault (gang rape) from his previous school. 

He was said to have been previously expelled during the second term of the ongoing 2024 academic session by his previous school, Evangel Secondary School, Achara Layout Enugu, owned by the Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria.

Following his expulsion, it was reported yesterday that his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cosmos Offo, enrolled him in Malex School. However, when the principal of Evangel Secondary School found out about this, he quickly went to the new school to warn them that Ebube was a negative influence. This revelation, according to a MySchoolnews report, led to Ebube being expelled from Malex School without an opportunity to defend himself or explain his side of the story.

The elder brother of the deceased, an undergraduate, who gave his name as Mr. Onyedika Offo, confirmed the tragic turn of events. He said the bereaved family is yet to pull themselves from the shock of Ebube demise which happened on Wednesday. "I was in school when I got the news last Wednesday that Ebube, my younger brother, drank a substance thought to be snipper, after which he was affirmed dead. "He was discouraged and depressed because of the suspension his school Malex International School gave him".

In the light of this, the authorities of the schools involved are yet to release an official statement on this tragic development. In the meanwhile, Ebube's tragic demise paints a crude picture of the terrible impact of depression, while emphasising the need for proper and healthy child monitoring and mental evalualation in the Nigerian society.
