As part of activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their class, the 1984 Alumni set of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has made a significant contribution to their alma mater. In a generous move, they donated state-of-the-art internet connectivity infrastructure, enhancing the department’s capabilities for research and learning.

The handing-over ceremony took place on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, within the Department premises. The project includes cable LAN devices and 21 wireless access point installations, covering offices and classrooms. These technological upgrades will empower students and faculty alike, enabling them to compete favorably in the digital age.

Representing the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, praised the 1984 Alumni Class for their remarkable gesture. He emphasized that this donation exemplifies the power of alumni engagement and commitment to the institution’s growth. Furthermore, he expressed gratitude for their contributions to the University’s development, highlighting their role as trailblazers for future generations.

In his remarks, Mr. Fred Ohwawha, President of the 1984 Alumni set, underscored the significance of the internet connectivity project. He stated, “We are proud to give back to the department that shaped us into the professionals we are today. For us, this move holds special meaning as we commemorate our class’s 40th anniversary.”

The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday, also expressed appreciation for the donors’ immense support over the years. He believes that this timely and apt donation will empower the department to produce well-rounded graduates equipped with the skills needed to excel in today’s digital landscape.
