ABU-Trained Engineer Urges State Governments to Leverage Electricity Act 2023 for Energy Security

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria - Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, a renowned energy expert and former Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, has advised state governments to harness the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023 to establish solid electricity markets and ensure energy security.
Speaking at a public lecture organized by the Academy of Natural Science and Engineering in Nigeria (ANSEN) at Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Sambo emphasized the need for states to enact electricity laws aligned with the national Electricity Act 2023. This, he said, would create a clear legal framework for state-level operations while maintaining national compliance.
Prof Sambo, who is also the President of the Nigerian Academy of Science and Professor Emeritus at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, outlined key strategies for state governments to achieve energy security.
Prof Sambo cautioned state governments to avoid pitfalls, including political interference, weak institutional capacity, and neglecting infrastructure challenges. He also emphasized the need for adequate funding and investment mobilization to support infrastructure development and service improvements.
The lecture, titled "Energy Security and Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Way Forward for State Governments," was part of the Academy of Natural Science and Engineering in Nigeria's (ANSEN) public lecture series.
