In a major boost for technology-driven education in Nigeria, Tertiary Education Trust Fund has approved a N3 billion special intervention grant for Federal University Lokoja to establish a Centre of Excellence focused on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences.

The new facility, known as the Centre of Excellence on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences (ARCS), is expected to serve as a hub for advanced research, innovation, and digital skills development in emerging technologies.

The university disclosed the development through a statement issued by its Director of Strategic Communication and Corporate Documentation, Dr Tosin Olagunju. According to the statement, the approval was officially communicated in a letter dated April 27, 2026, signed by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny S. T. Echono.

The intervention is designed to strengthen research and innovation in fast-growing fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and cyber sciences — areas increasingly shaping the future of industries, education, healthcare, security, and economic development worldwide.

University officials described the approval as a significant milestone in the institution’s ambition to position itself as a leader in technological innovation and solution-driven research in Nigeria. The ARCS centre is expected to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, support technological advancement, and create opportunities for capacity building among students, researchers, and industry professionals.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Gbega Ibileye, expressed appreciation to TETFund for the confidence placed in the institution. He assured stakeholders that the university would ensure transparency, accountability, and full compliance with the implementation guidelines attached to the intervention.

Ibileye also noted that the centre would open new opportunities for scholars, innovators, and industry stakeholders to develop technological solutions capable of addressing real-world challenges and creating positive social impact.

With growing global demand for expertise in AI, robotics, and cybersecurity, the establishment of the ARCS centre could position Federal University Lokoja among Nigeria’s emerging institutions driving technological advancement and digital transformation.
