Akwa Ibom State University Hosts 43rd Annual Nigerian Mathematical Society Conference
The Department of Mathematics, Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has hosted the 43rd Annual Conference of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS) with the theme ‘Mathematics for Sustainable Development in a Changing World.’ The 3-day conference organised for mathematicians, researchers, educators and students across Nigeria and other countries commenced Wednesday May 13, 2026 at the Main Campus, Ikot Akpaden, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the conference, the Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. OtoAbasi E. Akpan who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Iniobong Umotong welcomed participants to Akwa Ibom State University and informed that the University operates a multi-campus system with the Department of Mathematics situated in the Institution's Main Campus. He said that many people still have a phobia for mathematics despite the efforts and contributions of the Nigerian Mathematical Society in promoting the subject nationwide. According to him, mathematics continues to play a vital role in the development of science and technology in the modern world. The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the conferees to explore and enjoy the attractions and peace of the State alongside the conference activities. He urged parents to send their children to the Institution, which is committed to providing quality training and education for future generations.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong E. Umoh, who also served as the Special Guest of Honour, represented by the Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Prof. Anthony Usoro welcomed participants to the peaceful and secure environment of Akwa Ibom State. The Commissioner commended the key note speaker, Prof. Aniekan Ebiefung for the insightful presentation, noting that the conference theme aligns with the State Government's ARISE Agenda which focuses on Agricultural Revolution, Rural development, Infrastructural Maintenance, Security Management, Education and Health. According to him, Mathematics remains essential to achieving the objectives of the ARISE Agenda. He encouraged the participants to use their knowledge and expertise to contribute meaningfully to the development of the Nigerian society and their respective states.

Delivering the key note address, Prof. Aniekan Ebiefung highlighted the role of Mathematics in addressing global challenges, technological innovation, sustainable development and educational advancement in a rapidly changing world.
The Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Prof. Enobong Joshua welcomed all participants to the conference. He appreciated God for protection and safety of all the conferees from different destinations. Prof. Joshua thanked the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their support of the programme. He expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for Education, keynote speakers and guests for their valuable contributions. He lauded members of the committee for their selfless efforts toward the success of the event and wished the participants a fulfilling conference.
Highlight of the event was the decoration of Prof. Bashir Ali and Prof. G.C.E. Mbah as Fellows of the Nigerian Mathematical Society. The conference which ended Friday, May 15, 2026 also featured Annual General Meeting, plenary and parallel sessions with various paper presentations, cocktail and dinner.
In attendance from AKSU were: The Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies and Chairman, Committee of Deans, Prof. Idongesit Issac; Heads of Departments in the Faculty of Physical Sciences; Staff and Students. Other participants included: Delegates from universities, polytechnics, research institutes, professional bodies and students.
