Akwa Ibom State University Partners with Nigerian Institute of Architects to Advance New Faculty of Architecture
Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has received the leadership and members of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Otoabasi E. Akpan Thursday,March 26, 2026 at the University Liaison Office, Shelter Afrique, Uyo.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof. Iniobong Umotong, warmly welcomed the delegation and described the visit as timely and strategic, particularly in fostering partnerships that would enhance academic and professional development.
He noted that the visit underscored a shared commitment to strengthening collaboration between academia and the architectural profession, while identifying with the University’s transformative leadership.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of NIA, Edidiong Ukpong, PhD, FNIA, congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his substantive appointment by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, describing it as well-deserved and reflective of a distinguished career in public service, academic excellence, and institutional advancement.
Arc. Ukpong commended the Vice Chancellor’s visionary leadership in the establishment of the Faculty of Architecture at the University, aligning with the ARISE Agenda of the State Government and sustaining the legacy of Arc. Victor Attah, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and past President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects. He described the initiative as a strategic investment in the built environment, positioning the University as a hub for training future architects. He also highlighted critical infrastructural needs for the Faculty, including computers, drawing boards, functional studios, lecture halls, a safe learning environment, and well-trained manpower.
The NIA further pledged its support towards the growth and sustainability of the Faculty of Architecture through curriculum development, programme accreditation, mentorship, continuous professional development, industry exposure, as well as research and practice linkages.
In a Vote of Thanks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Nkanikpo Ibok, expressed appreciation to the NIA for the visit and encouraged sustained collaboration, particularly in mentorship and knowledge transfer, to ensure a solid foundation for the continued growth of the Faculty of Architecture.
A major highlight of the visit was the presentation of an Award to the Vice Chancellor in recognition of his visionary leadership in Architecture.
Present during the meeting were Principal Officers, Staff members from the Registrar's Office, Staff from the Directorate of Information, Public Relations and Protocol, AKSU and Architects across various cadres.
