Bayero University Kano Hosts Renewable Energy Conference, Experts Warn on Fossil Fuels

Bayero University Kano (BUK) recently hosted the inaugural International Conference on Renewable Energy, addressing the critical environmental impacts of fossil fuel dependency. Keynote speaker and renewable energy expert, Emeritus Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo, highlighted the harmful effects of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which emit substantial carbon dioxide, contribute to global warming, and threaten agricultural stability due to erratic climate patterns.
Professor Sambo, also the President-elect of the Nigerian Academy of Science, advocated for Nigeria to transition toward alternative energy sources, including electric vehicles and renewable resources. He noted the success of smaller African countries, such as Ghana and Kenya, where governments have shown political will to expand electricity access through renewable energy initiatives.
The conference, organized by BUK’s Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Transition, aimed to advance discussions on sustainable energy solutions that could support Nigeria's development while mitigating environmental degradation.
