Bayero University, Kano, to Undergo 6 MW Solar Power Upgrade
Bayero University, Kano, is set for a major energy transformation with the commencement of a project to upgrade its solar power plant from 3.5 megawatts to 6 megawatts.
The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) officially launched the initiative, which includes full refurbishment of existing infrastructure, replacement of the storage system with new LED‑iron‑battery technology, inverter upgrades, distribution network enhancement, and installation of an additional 2.5 MW of solar panels.
During a ceremony on Thursday, 20 November 2025, REA Managing Director Dr. Abba Aliyu Abubakar highlighted the project’s alignment with the federal government’s National Public Sector Solarization Initiative. Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Haruna Musa expressed gratitude, noting the upgrade will address long‑standing challenges of erratic power supply and high electricity costs at BUK.
The project also establishes a robust maintenance mechanism to ensure long‑term sustainability. It is part of a broader programme targeting 26 Nigerian universities for similar solar transformations.
REA’s Dr. Abba Aliyu Abubakar stated the upgrade will drastically reduce BUK’s dependence on the national grid and lower its energy bill. Prof. Musa added that stable power is essential for BUK’s global competitiveness and reflects the administration’s commitment to powering education.¹_
