The Budding Leaders Empowerment Initiative (BUDLEIN), in collaboration with the Nimbe Adedipe Library, has trained over 100 school librarians and teacher-librarians in Ogun State as part of efforts to strengthen literacy development and improve library services in schools.
The capacity-building programme brought together participants from across the state for hands-on training aimed at enhancing school library operations and promoting a stronger reading culture among pupils.
Speaking at the event, the University Librarian, Prof. Abayomi Owolabi, underscored the importance of functional school libraries in shaping educational outcomes. He called on schools to institutionalize regular reading periods within academic schedules and ensure proper maintenance of library infrastructure to support effective learning.
He emphasized that well-managed libraries remain central to developing critical thinking skills and sustaining lifelong learning habits among students.

The Executive Director of BUDLEIN, Prof. Iyabode Kehinde, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to improving literacy levels and supporting the establishment of functional school libraries across Nigeria. She described libraries as key instruments for educational transformation and national development.
Facilitators at the training provided participants with practical instruction on core library operations, including cataloguing and acquisition processes, sourcing of relevant materials, and effective library management techniques. Participants were also exposed to the use of electronic resources and digital tools designed to enhance teaching and learning in modern school environments.
Over 100 participants attended the training programme, with beneficiaries noting significant improvements in their understanding of library systems and practices. One of the participants, Mrs. Yemisi Ojo, described the training as highly practical and insightful, stating that it equipped her with actionable skills to promote reading culture among students.
