BUK Professor Rabia Salihu Sa’id Appointed To UN Panel Of 21 Global Experts On Consequences Of Nuclear War

Professor Rabia Salihu Sa’id of Bayero University Kano, BUK, has been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to serve on a prestigious 21-member independent scientific panel established to examine the physical effects and societal consequences of nuclear war.

The appointment, made under UN General Assembly Resolution 79/238, places Professor Rabia among a select group of the world’s foremost scientists entrusted with evaluating one of humanity’s most critical global challenges. The panel is expected to present its findings in 2027, providing scientific evidence that will help shape international discussions on nuclear risks, global security, and humanitarian protection.

Born on April 21, 1963, in Wangara, Kano State, Professor Rabia Salihu Sa’id has built an extraordinary academic career through determination, resilience, and excellence. Despite overcoming significant societal and personal challenges, she has emerged as one of Nigeria’s leading physicists and an internationally respected researcher.

Professor Rabia obtained her Bachelor of Science, http://B.Sc., Master of Science, http://M.Sc., and Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D., in Physics from Bayero University Kano. Her passion for environmental sustainability and development also led her to earn another Master’s degree in Environment and Development from the University of Reading, United Kingdom, through a prestigious Ford Foundation Fellowship.

Today, she is a Professor of Physics at Bayero University Kano, where she has made significant contributions to teaching, research, and mentorship. Her research focuses on atmospheric physics, space-weather physics, electronics, and particle physics, areas that continue to influence scientific advancement both within Nigeria and internationally.

Beyond the classroom and laboratory, Professor Rabia has demonstrated how science can address real-life challenges. She developed environmentally friendly briquettes from carpentry waste as an alternative energy source to reduce dependence on firewood and help combat deforestation. She has also led innovative low-cost air quality monitoring projects, combining ground-based observations with satellite data to improve environmental monitoring and climate research.

Her journey is also one of breaking barriers. Professor Rabia Salihu Sa’id was among the first two female academics ever employed by the Department of Physics at Bayero University Kano, paving the way for generations of women to pursue careers in physics and other STEM disciplines.
