CORBON plans prize award for ‘Best Final Year Project’ at ABU’s Department of Building

 

Plans are afoot by the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) to award a national prize for the best three final year projects across universities offering building in Nigeria.

To this effect, the Department of Building, Ahmadu Bello University, has been identified by the Council as one of the proposed centres of excellence for the assessment of submitted students’ projects. 

This revelation was made by the Chairman of the Council, Bldr. Samson Ameh Opaluwah when he led CORBON executive members on a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, in Zaria today (19th February, 2024). 

Opaluwah explained that the decision to institute the prize for the best final year projects underscored the Council’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of builders and promoting academic excellence in the field of construction.

He said that with the establishment of CORBON Professorial Practice Resources Limited (COPPRes), the Council also looked forward to partnering with the University’s Department of Building on capacity development and training initiatives for the benefit of the building industry and the country at large. 

“Through COPPRes, we aim to mobilise and leverage the expertise and resources available to enhance the skills and competencies of builders, and construction professionals, towards ensuring a work force that is equipped to tackle the challenges of the 21st century”, he stressed.  

While reiterating the Council’s commitment towards advancing excellence in the construction industry, the CORBON boss expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his outstanding leadership, unwavering dedication, and tireless commitment to excellence. 

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, who was the immediate past Chairman of CORBON after serving for eight years, expressed appreciation for the existing ties between Ahmadu Bello University and CORBON.

While thanking the Council’s executive members for the working visit to the University and for their contribution to the growth and development of the Council, Prof. Bala advised that CORBON should start thinking of establishing a Builders’ Foundation or Endowment for sustainability. 

The Vice-Chancellor described as a “welcome development” the prize for the best final year projects to be instituted in the Department of Building, stressing that the University would need new skills to further develop the curriculum of the Department by looking at the common skills the students ought to have.

Alhassan Marke; CORBON Member and Chairman, CORBON (NPower) Implementation Committee, Prof. Shehu Amadu Bustani; CORBON Member, Bldr. Kennedy Ukponirefe Aimiywhu; and CORBON Project Manager, Iwangshak Hirse. 

Also on the entourage were Vice-Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Building, Kaduna State Chapter, Bldr. Ibrahim Munawwar; and Secretary, Bldr. Adamu Kabiru Difah. 

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Raymond B. Bako; Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila; Bursar, Malam Muhammad Bello Aminu Gurin; and Ag. University Librarian, Dr. Abdulhamid Liman Gambo, assisted the Vice-Chancellor in receiving the visiting CORBON executives.
