Embrace technology to improve your judicial work, ICPC chair urges judges, justices at ABU conference

The Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has enjoined judges and justices to embrace the use of technology to enhance their judicial work.

Dr. Aliyu, who spoke at this year’s annual Judges Conference organised by the Centre for Islamic Legal Studies (CILS), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, also said that the use of technology became necessary, as it was the in-thing today. 

The conference, entitled “Contemporary and Emerging Issues in the Practice and Procedure of Islamic Family Law in Nigeria”, took place at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja. 

The ICPC boss, who is a former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice for Jigawa State, warned that flagrant disregard for technology would not augur well for the development of the judicial system. 

Dr. Aliyu, who described this year’s conference theme as apt, also stressed that the Islamic family law is necessary given the importance of family as an institution.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, GCON, who declared the conference open, commended the effort of ABU Centre for Islamic Legal Studies for sustaining collaboration with the National Judicial Institute. 

Justice Ariwoola, who also chaired the occasion, stressed the need for such conference to enhance the capacity of judges in discharging their duties effectively. 

Also speaking, the Administrator, National Judicial Institute, Hon. Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, who was represented by the Secretary of the Institute, Barrister Olumo Abdulaziz, said that the conference aimed at developing the overall knowledge of judicial officers. 

Justice Abdullahi, who commended CILS for its consistency in organising the yearly event, also explained that the conference was crucial for the establishment of efficient justice system. 

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof. Kabiru Bala, said that CILS had been providing the much needed assistance to the Nigerian judiciary in terms of organising intellectual gatherings such as this year’s conference. 

The Vice-Chancellor, who noted that the annual conference was about the only forum where judges of different jurisdictions meet to deliberate and share experience, said that the CILS’s contribution and support to the Nigerian judiciary in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute could not be overemphasized. 

Prof. Bala, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Law, Dr. Salim B. Magashi, expressed gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, for “immense support and contribution” to the administration of justice in Nigeria. 

Earlier in his address of welcome, the Director, Centre for Islamic Legal Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Dr. Sa’ad Abubakar Musa, explained that the objective of the conference was for the development of Shariah and promotion of legal research. 

Former Director, ABU Centre for Islamic Legal Studies, Malam Ibrahim Sulaiman, gave the keynote address at the conference, and expressed gratitude to the former Chief of Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad and key stakeholders for their support to the Centre.

The Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, and Emir of Zazzau, His Highness, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, sent in their representatives to the conference.
