Federal Polytechnic Ukana Set to Launch 13 New Skills Programmes

Federal Polytechnic, Ukana is on track to introduce 13 new skills acquisition programmes under the National Skills Qualifications (NSQ) framework, following a successful resources inspection by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

The inspection was carried out on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the Polytechnic’s Entrepreneurship Centre, to assess its readiness to become an accredited national training centre for skill acquisition in line with federal government directives.

Leader of the NBTE team, Mr. Miri Ebipade, explained that the visit aimed to certify the Polytechnic as a centre qualified to train youths and students in various vocational trades. He praised the institution’s facilities, stating they were well-prepared to deliver hands-on training that meets NSQ standards. He further emphasized that NSQ certification will enhance employability and entrepreneurial opportunities for trainees across the country.

“We are here to grant you the approval that will enable you to become a certified training center, empowering youths in the South-South Region to acquire valuable skills. With NSQ certification, your trainees will have the opportunity to secure employment in government-owned institutions. The goal is skills, not a degree,” he said.

The NBTE team inspected workshops in key trades such as carpentry and joinery, paint making, welding and fabrication, plumbing, and electrical installations, confirming the institution’s capacity to begin full implementation.

Rector of the Polytechnic, Amb. (Mrs.) Eduma Enobong Essien, commended NBTE for its partnership and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to vocational excellence. She noted that the Polytechnic’s inclusion in the scheme is a major step toward empowering students with practical, income-generating skills.

She added that the Polytechnic’s selection as one of the few institutions in the South-South region for these programmes is an honour that would not be taken for granted.

Also speaking, Mr. Abdullahi Naim, a member of the NBTE team, expressed satisfaction with the institution’s level of preparedness, while pointing out a few areas requiring attention to meet optimal standards.
