FG to Provide Affordable High-Speed Internet for UNILORIN Students, Says Minister Bosun Tijani
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Mr. Bosun Tijani, has announced plans to provide University of Ilorin students with affordable high-speed internet, inspired by the eduroam model.
The Federal Government is set to transform the digital learning experience at the University of Ilorin with affordable high-speed broadband internet. The initiative, modeled after the international WiFi network 'eduroam,' aims to connect all hostels on campus, linking UNILORIN students with peers across Nigeria and worldwide.
The announcement was made on November 13, 2024, during the Minister's visit to the University, represented by his Special Assistant on AI Research, Mr. Olubunmi Ajala. This visit preceded the 6th Africalics International Research Conference, hosted by the institution under the theme “The Africa We Want: Leveraging Innovation and Digital Transformation.”
Mr. Tijani emphasized the role of innovation and technology in solving "wicked problems"—complex challenges requiring advanced solutions—and commended Africalics for fostering collaboration between research and application in fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, expressed gratitude for the Ministry's support and sought additional assistance in equipping the University’s Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre and Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) to enhance teaching and learning. Prof. Egbewole also highlighted UNILORIN’s recent AI workshop and requested support for the University's growing AI initiatives.
