FUTA Appoints Professor Akeem Lawal as New Dean of School of Basic Medical Sciences
Professor Lawal has held key academic and administrative roles at institutions such as the Federal University Oye-Ekiti and Lagos State University College of Medicine.
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has appointed Professor Akeem Olalekan Lawal as the new Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, effective August 1, 2024. The appointment follows his election by the Board of the School of Basic Medical Sciences on July 24, 2024.
Professor Lawal is a renowned academic and researcher in Biochemistry and Environmental Cardiology. He earned a First-Class Honors degree in Biochemistry from the University of Ibadan in 1997 and a master’s degree from the same institution in 2003. He completed his PhD at the University of Strathclyde, UK, under the Commonwealth Scholarship, and furthered his research as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa.
His research has garnered numerous accolades, including the Best Graduating Student Award at the University of Ibadan, the Gordon Research Award in the USA, and recognition as one of the World Top 2% Best Scientists by Stratford University in 2023. Professor Lawal's notable achievements include the development of novel heme oxygenase-1 knockout mice and over 50 high-impact journal publications. He has also supervised many PhD and master’s students who have advanced to academic positions.
Professor Lawal has held key academic and administrative roles at institutions such as the Federal University Oye-Ekiti and Lagos State University College of Medicine. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Heart Association and the British Toxicological Society, and serves as a reviewer and external examiner for various academic journals and universities.
