In a recent collaborative effort, the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) hosted a pioneering career development workshop for women in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Organized by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) in conjunction with the Network of Nigerian Women in STEM (NWiSTEM) and Women's Dignity Initiative Incorporated (WDII), the workshop aimed to equip female scholars with the tools necessary for academic advancement and achieving a healthy work-life balance.

The event, held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, saw distinguished speakers, including FUTA's Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, delivering insightful talks on various aspects of career progression for women in STEM. Professor Oladiji emphasized the importance of breaking free from self-imposed limitations and leveraging one's intellectual resources to succeed in any field.
Key takeaways from Professor Oladiji's address included the necessity for women to take control of their lives, make informed decisions, and continuously invest in their professional development through learning and networking opportunities. She also stressed the value of attending workshops and conferences for networking and skill enhancement.

Further enriching the workshop, Professor Max Haggblom, Editor in Chief of FEMS Microbiology Ecology and Department Chair at Rutgers University, provided valuable insights on paper and article writing via Zoom. He highlighted the significance of publishing in reputable journals and outlined essential principles for effective communication in scientific research.
Chairperson of OWSD, FUTA, Professor Folasade Olajuyigbe, emphasized the organization's commitment to fostering research collaboration, networking, and mentoring to support the career growth of women scientists. She commended the Vice Chancellor for her unwavering support and applauded the contributions of women scientists at FUTA to science and innovation in Nigeria.
