The Department of Microbiology at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) recently honoured Professor Felix Akinyosoye, a distinguished scholar who retired after years of exemplary service.

The celebration featured a novelty football match as part of the festivities recognizing his contributions to the department and the University.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Timothy Amos, congratulated Professor Akinyosoye and wished him continued success in his future pursuits. She encouraged staff and students to emulate his dedication, work ethic, and commitment to academic excellence. Professor Oladiji also commended the Department for organizing the event and praised the Student Union for ensuring robust student participation.

In his remarks, Professor Akinyosoye expressed heartfelt gratitude to the University management, department staff, and students for the show of appreciation. He described the honour as a meaningful and memorable milestone in his academic journey, advising students to remain diligent and committed, noting, “There is no shortcut anywhere to success, and the only reward for hard work is more work.”

The novelty football competition involved teams representing students from 100L to 500L. The final match, held on February 11, 2026, saw the 500L team, nicknamed Microbian Lions, face off against the 200L students. After an exciting and entertaining 90 minutes, the Microbian Lions triumphed with a decisive 5–1 victory, rounding off a fitting tribute to a remarkable career.

The event celebrated not only Professor Akinyosoye’s legacy but also the spirit of camaraderie and excellence within FUTA’s Microbiology Department.
