The School of Life Sciences (SLS), Federal University of Technology, Minna, has celebrated the remarkable career and invaluable contributions of Prof. (Mrs.) Helmina Olufunmilayo Akanya at a colourful send-off ceremony held in her honour as she retires from active service.

The event, which took place on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the Biochemistry Lecture Room I, Main Campus, brought together colleagues, students, friends, and well-wishers who paid glowing tributes to the renowned academic for her years of meritorious service, impactful mentorship, and dedication to humanity.

Welcoming guests to the occasion, the Dean, School of Life Sciences, Prof. Nasiru Usman Adabara described Prof. Akanya as an icon and a pillar of the academic community whose influence transcends the field of Biochemistry.

 He noted that her immense contributions to the growth of the school, her passion for people, and her commitment to mentorship and leadership have left indelible marks that will continue to inspire generations. He appreciated her selfless service to humanity and prayed for greater fulfilment in her retirement years.

The ceremony featured heartfelt goodwill messages from colleagues, associates, and students, all of whom celebrated the celebrant’s exceptional character and impact.

Representing the Director of DRID, Prof. Chiemela E. Chinma, the Deputy Director, Prof. Lanre Olatomiwa commended Prof. Akanya for her immeasurable contributions to the Directorate and the University community. He appreciated her encouragement, prayers, and support over the years, while praying for good health and fulfilment in retirement.

An old friend and colleague, Prof. Musa Galadima, reflected on their undergraduate days together and highlighted her numerous achievements and sacrifices towards the institution and the wider community.

Also speaking, Prof. Emmanuel O. Ogbadoyi described her as a compassionate woman with a large heart who has positively shaped many lives and generations through her service and mentorship.

A mentee and former student, Prof. Ali Audu Jigam, recounted how Prof. Akanya profoundly influenced his academic and personal development. He described her as an administrator par excellence and an exemplary leader whose legacy will continue to inspire the School of Life Sciences and beyond.

Similarly, Prof. Adamu Yusuf Kabiru praised her passion for excellence and unwavering commitment to progress, noting that she remains a role model worthy of emulation by colleagues and students alike.

Speaking on behalf of Heads of Departments in SLS, Dr. Ismail Bello congratulated the celebrant on her successful career and affirmed that her enduring legacies would continue to speak for her in years to come.

Student representatives also expressed appreciation for her investment in people, stating that the seeds she planted through mentorship and guidance would continue to yield positive results long after her retirement.

Responding to the goodwill messages and gifts, Prof. Helmina Olufunmilayo Akanya thanked everyone for the overwhelming show of love and support. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to impact lives academically and personally, while encouraging staff and students to continue upholding the values and excellence for which the School of Life Sciences is known.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Head of Biotechnology Department, Dr. Aisha Gado appreciated all guests and members of the organising committee for honouring the celebrant and wished Prof. Akanya success and fulfilment in the new phase of life.

The Celebrant was accompanied to the event by her husband, the former Director - General of SON, Dr. John Akanya.
