Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) is set to celebrate its 12th convocation on November 16, 2024, marking a historic milestone by awarding first-class honors to 27 students—the highest in the university’s history.

Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) is preparing for a historic 12th convocation ceremony on November 16, where a record-breaking 27 students will be awarded first-class honors. This achievement highlights the university’s growing reputation for academic excellence and its dedication to student development.

In total, 546 students are set to graduate in various fields. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Christian Anieke proudly emphasized this accomplishment, noting it as the highest number of first-class graduates in the institution's history. “With 546 students set to graduate, 27 have achieved first-class honors—the highest we’ve awarded in a single year,” Prof. Anieke shared during a press briefing in Enugu.

To kick off the convocation festivities, GOUNI organized a 22km marathon race, underscoring the university’s commitment to both academic and athletic excellence. Plans are also underway to expand the university’s sports infrastructure, with a vision of establishing a sports hub that meets international standards.

In addition to the convocation, GOUNI is celebrating several significant advancements. The university recently launched a new nursing school, approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, bringing its academic programs to a total of 83. Of these, 40 are undergraduate programs, and 43 are at the postgraduate level.

GOUNI also completed an oxygen plant to serve local hospitals and opened Africa’s first DNA learning center, further enhancing its position as a leader in scientific and medical innovation. Additionally, the university’s College of Medicine received accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, allowing it to conduct MBBS exams. The pioneer class, now in their third year, is set to take their second MBBS exams in March 2025.

The admission quota for the medicine program has expanded to 75 students, making GOUNI the first Nigerian university to conduct two MBBS exams by the second year.
