Professor Uwakwe Abugu has been elected as the new Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) and is committed to making the faculty the top choice for law students in Nigeria.

Professor Uwakwe Abugu has pledged to transform the Faculty of Law at the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) into Nigeria's leading law faculty following his election as Dean. Abugu, a Professor of Medical Law and Ethics, aims to collaborate with university management to enhance existing infrastructure and make the faculty the preferred choice for law students.

In his inaugural address after a competitive election, Abugu emphasized his commitment to building upon the achievements of his predecessors. He succeeded Professor Abdurasheed Musa Yusuf, an expert in Islamic Law, and praised his significant contributions to the faculty's development. Abugu also acknowledged Professor Muktar's impactful tenure, which included roles as Dean and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics).

"My primary objective is to elevate the UNIABUJA Law Faculty's status through infrastructural improvements and academic excellence," Abugu stated. "I am dedicated to ensuring that our faculty becomes the first choice for aspiring law students across Nigeria."

Professor Abugu has an impressive academic background, holding a Bachelor's degree in Law from the University of Calabar, where he graduated with Second Class (Honours) Upper Division in 1994. He was recognized for his outstanding performance, winning multiple awards, including accolades for being the best graduating student in seven courses. He later obtained his Master of Laws (L.LM) from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and started his academic career at the University of Ilorin as an Assistant Lecturer.

His career includes serving as Special Assistant to the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. He is currently the Director General of the Institute of Medical and Health Law (IMHL) and President of both the Medical Law Professionals Association of Nigeria (MELPAN) and the Lifeline Centre for Medical and Health Rights Advocacy. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers.

Abugu is also an accomplished author, with his notable work titled Land Use and Reform in Nigeria: Law and Practice (2012) and has published extensively in various local and international journals.

He is married to Barr. Nkechi Uwakwe-Abugu, and they have two children, Nmachinemelum and Jidechukwu. Under his leadership, the UNIABUJA Law Faculty aims to set new standards in legal education in Nigeria.
