The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede, reassured students of Islamic Studies about the value of their course during the annual symposium of the 400-level students of the Department of Religions, Islamic Studies Unit, University of Ilorin.

Addressing the students, Prof. Oloyede, represented by Navy Captain Gidado Taofeeq Mikhdad, emphasized that studying Islamic Studies does not render students inferior. He encouraged them to disregard stereotypes and view their academic journey as a path filled with opportunities for growth and success. “Success is not a straight path but often a winding road filled with obstacles, but each challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become stronger,” Captain Gidado conveyed.

Captain Gidado, who is an alumnus of Islamic Studies and currently a Naval officer, urged the students to see themselves beyond potential clerics and strive for monumental achievements. “Good things come with patience and seeing themselves as someone who would prosper is the beginning and with Allah everything and anything is possible,” he noted.

Speaking on "New Directions in Islamic Studies in the 21st Century," Captain Gidado highlighted the importance of incorporating interdisciplinary approaches into the curriculum. He proposed combining Islamic Studies with digital humanities, political science, medical sociology, Islamic bioethics, and Islamic architecture to enhance the students' learning experience.

The symposium was also graced by Prof. Lere Adeyemi, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, who reminded the students of their potential as global citizens. He encouraged them to remain focused and believe in their abilities and God.

Mr. Ibrahim Olayinka Oniye, the Level Adviser of the 400-level students, motivated the students to view their training as an essential phase that equips them for future endeavors. He emphasized the importance of steadfastness, patience, commitment, and tolerance in achieving success.

The event featured poetry renditions and the presentation of awards and certificates to the lecturers of the Department. Dignitaries present included Prof. Badmas Lanre Yusuf, Director of Linguistics Immersion Centre, Prof. Imam Aliagan, Dr. Akiti Alamu, Dr. Dauda Gambari, Dr. Danladi Shittu, and other esteemed guests.
