Lagos State University (LASU) achieved a remarkable feat as One Hundred and Thirty-Nine (139) of its students were selected for the prestigious United Nations Millennium Fellows Programme. This recognition comes alongside LASU’s inclusion as one of the 280+ campuses worldwide hosting this year’s Millennium Fellows initiative.
From a pool of 52,000 young leaders representing 170 nations, only 6,000 were chosen for the Class of 2024. Among them, LASU proudly contributed 139 outstanding students. Additionally, out of the 6,000+ campuses vying to host the programme, only a select few—280+ campuses from 48 nations—were granted this opportunity, with LASU among the chosen institutions.
The Millennium Fellowship Class of 2024, organized by the Millennium Campus Network (MCN) and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), aims to turn the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNAI principles into tangible realities. Participants will engage in a semester-long journey, honing skills essential for careers aligned with the UN’s development agenda. They will also undertake social impact projects, individually or collaboratively, to advance one or more of the 17 SDGs and 10 UNAI principles.
In her congratulatory message, LASU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, praised the students’ dedication and emphasized that nothing is beyond their reach when they set their minds to it. She encouraged them to fully embrace this opportunity and strive for excellence throughout the programme.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Prof. Tayo Ajayi, Director of the Centre for the Actualization of Sustainable Development Goals, in mobilizing LASU students for this prestigious fellowship.
