Man Electrocuted While Attempting to Steal Electricity Cables at UNIZIK

Awka, Anambra State - A yet-to-be-identified man met a tragic end on Monday night as he was electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal electricity cables within the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka campus.

According to sources, the incident unfolded near the Faculty of Education building on Monday evening. The man, whose identity remains unknown, was reportedly in the process of cutting cables within the electricity installation area when an unexpected event occurred.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) suddenly restored power to the area, leading to the electrocution of the individual in question. It is believed that the thief had nearly completed cutting a high-tension cable when the electricity supply was unexpectedly reinstated.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that officials from the EEDC, alongside the university's safety department and local law enforcement, promptly responded to the incident. The lifeless body of the perpetrator was retrieved and subsequently transported to the mortuary.

The discovery of the deceased individual's body suspended from an electric pole at a transformer point in the vicinity shocked members of the university community. Investigations into the incident are currently underway.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful as of the time of reporting.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with theft or vandalism of electrical infrastructure and underscores the importance of safety precautions in such situations.
