Mass Comm Alumni Pledge Support for UNILAG Growth, Project 4-Storey Faculty Building

Executive members of the University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumi Association (UMCAA) have pledged to harness skills, experience and finances to the continued growth and development of the University of Lagos.

This was disclosed at a courtesy visit to the University management, by the alumni of the department which was recently upgraded into Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. 

The delegation, which was led by its Chairman, Mr. Seyi Gambo, included the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday and National Publicity Secretary, Unilag Alumni Association, Mrs. Funmi Falobi. 

Others included the immediate past President, Mr. Adewale Williams, the immediate past Secretary, Mr. John Sonayon; iformer President, Elder Vincent Oyo and Prince Lekan Sote. Also present was the former Head of Department, Prof. Adepoju Tejumaiye; Head of Department, Mass Communication, Dr. Tayo Popoola; Head of Department, Public Relations and Advertising, Dr. Olusoji Alabi; Welfare Secretary, Mrs. Yetunde Abdulkareem and Mr. Odion Aleobua. 

The delegation was received by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, who was ably represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics & Research), Prof. Olusoji Ilori.

The President in his speech revealed that upon the approval by the management, it would be erecting a four-storey structure at the space between the faculty and Moremi hall as part of its effort to build a befitting and world-class Faculty of Communication and Media Studies which would have ultramodern lecture theatres, research centres among others.

Mr. Gambo reeled out the list of notable alumni of the department - many of whom are making waves in the world of communication, media, and PR/advertising He also acknowledged the donations and contributions of its alumni and various class sets such as the UMCAA yearly Enterprise Competition, Annual Distinguished Service Awards, among others. 

Prof. Ilori, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor expressed delight in the speech of the UMCAA President, noting that the university has long yearned for such gestures. He also added that the previous donations by alumni and class sets of the faculty would be adopted as endowments of the university.

He added that alumni donations are part of the metrics used in the ranking of universities, which increases the marketability of both the university and her graduates. Prof. Ilori, on behalf of the VC assured the UMCAA team that their request for the use of land would be approved. 

He also praised the plan by the alumni to deploy its 5000 members to teaching and mentorship of the current students who would be getting industry knowledge that might not be taught in the classroom.

A plaque of honour was presented to the Vice Chancellor in recognition of steadfastness and contribution to the development of University.
