NAUB Holds Staff Career Development Workshop, Charges New Staff on Excellence and Career Growth
In a bid to build a highly competent and professional workforce, the University Career Service Centre (UCSC) of the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) recently hosted a comprehensive one-day training workshop tailored for newly employed staff.
The capacity-building event, which also drew participation from existing staff members, was designed to orient new personnel on the core values, operational expectations, and institutional opportunities that drive academic and administrative excellence at the university.
Setting the tone for the event, the Acting Director of the UCSC, Dr. Maryam Mohammed Muktar, delivered a warm welcome address. She congratulated the newly appointed staff on securing positions within one of Nigeria’s premier institutions dedicated to teaching, research, innovation, and national development.

The Special Guest of Honour and Vice-Chancellor of NAUB, Professor Lawan Bala Buratai, commended the Ag. Director for her unwavering commitment to organizing impactful training programs that continuously boost staff and student productivity. Officially welcoming the new intakes, the Vice-Chancellor urged them to take personal development seriously. He emphasized that self-improvement is crucial for acquiring the right competencies needed to fulfill the university's core mission: “To develop highly skilled military and civilian manpower with distinctive competence capable of providing technological solutions to the problems of the Nigerian Army, the military, and the nation.”
Professor Buratai further underscored that the institution maintains strict professional and behavioral standards, with continuous staff development serving as a central pillar for institutional growth.
The workshop featured robust presentations from the designated resource persons focusing on holistic staff growth. Delivering a paper on NAUB Academic Staff Career Development, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Abubakar Alkassim, stressed that academic progression must transcend mere promotions. He challenged lecturers to channel their research and academic outputs toward solving practical problems in alignment with the university's mandate.
In the same vein, the Deputy Registrar and Head of Establishment, Alh. Ibrahim Bulama Bukar, spoke on career development for non-teaching staff. He described career progression as a shared partnership between the employee and the institution, noting that no university can attain its strategic goals without a competent and professional support workforce.
Adding to the discourse, the DVC Military, Col AY Bello, stepped forward to share valuable comments and advice, charging staff members to be proactive in executing their daily responsibilities. He also strongly advised them to prioritize personal security, particularly in light of current security challenges facing the nation.
The event recorded a massive turnout, drawing commendations from leadership. In her vote of thanks, an elated Dr. Muktar expressed profound appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his unflinching support toward the UCSC. She also thanked the resource persons for sharing their wealth of knowledge and expertise.
The workshop featured a lively and robust interactive session, culminating in a group photograph.
The event was graced by several senior university officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Ayuba Audu Balami, the Director of Academic Planning, Lt Col Danzaki, and the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Fatima Kubli Mohammed, among other dignitaries.
