OAU Confers Rare Leadership Honour on Gbenga Elegbeleye, Citing Decades of Impact in Governance and Sports Reform

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has conferred its prestigious Award of Outstanding Leadership and Service on distinguished alumnus and sports administrator, Otunba Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, in recognition of what the institution described as decades of impactful leadership across public administration, governance, and sports development.

The honour, presented during the university’s 65th anniversary celebrations, was described as one of the institution’s most selective awards, reserved for individuals whose contributions extend beyond professional success to measurable national impact.

Although Elegbeleye was absent at the ceremony, the award was received on his behalf by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Oluropo Akinfala, amid applause from dignitaries, academics, alumni, and stakeholders in attendance.

The significance of the recognition was reinforced by the presence of representatives of key federal ministries, including the Minister of Education, represented by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, and the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

According to the university, the award was not merely ceremonial but a reflection of sustained excellence and leadership consistency demonstrated by Elegbeleye across multiple sectors.

A proud alumnus of OAU, Elegbeleye’s educational background includes St. Patrick’s Secondary School, Iwaro-Oka, and the University of Ife (now OAU), where he earned his degree before proceeding to obtain a Master’s in Public Administration.

His early public service trajectory included serving as Assistant State Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) in the old Ondo State between 1990 and 1993, a role that introduced him early to political and administrative leadership.

In 1997, he emerged as the youngest Chairman of Akoko North-East Local Government Council in Ondo State. During this period, he also contributed to educational development as a member of the Ondo State Primary Education Board.

His reputation for administrative efficiency was further consolidated in 2003 when he was appointed Chairman of the Ondo State Waste Management Authority by the late Governor Olusegun Agagu. Under his leadership, Akure was ranked among Nigeria’s cleanest state capitals, coming second only to Calabar in a Federal Ministry of Inter-Governmental Affairs assessment.

In 2007, Elegbeleye was elected to the House of Representatives, representing Akoko North East/North West Federal Constituency of Ondo State. While in the National Assembly, he served as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Sports and was also a member of several committees, including Defence, Appropriation, Works, Environment, Rural Development, and Inter-Parliamentary Affairs.

Beyond legislation, he facilitated development projects across his constituency, including schools, libraries, sporting facilities, rural electrification projects, boreholes, and erosion control initiatives.

His involvement in sports administration predates his national roles, having served in multiple capacities including Chairman of the Ondo State Table Tennis Association, Chairman of Rising Stars Football Club, Proprietor of Ikare United Football Club, Vice Chairman of the Ondo State Sports Development Committee, member of the Ondo State Football Association, and President of the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria in Ondo State.

These experiences later informed his appointment in 2013 as Director-General of the National Sports Commission, where he played a central role in sports administration reforms and institutional restructuring.

He currently serves as Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where he has overseen reforms in league administration, club licensing, officiating standards, commercial development, and fan engagement. Stakeholders have credited the reforms with improving the structure and visibility of domestic football in Nigeria.

OAU stated that Elegbeleye’s recognition reflects his long-standing belief in institution-building as a driver of national development, particularly through youth empowerment and structured systems in sports and governance.

The university noted that his career demonstrates a consistent commitment to translating public office into tangible development outcomes, aligning with its values of excellence, integrity, and service to humanity.

The award presentation, received by Prof. Oluropo Akinfala on behalf of the honouree, was met with a standing ovation, marking a symbolic moment in the university’s anniversary celebrations.

With the honour, OAU said it was not only celebrating past achievements but also reinforcing a model of leadership rooted in service, reform, and national development impact.
