Over 500,000 Nigerian Students Fail English and Mathematics in 2024 WASSCE
This trend raises additional concerns about the integrity and effectiveness of the current educational system.
The 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results have revealed that 503,275 candidates were unable to pass English Language and Mathematics. This alarming figure underscores a growing concern about the quality of education and student preparedness in Nigeria.
Amos Dangut, the Head of WAEC's Nigeria Office, noted that only 72.12% of the 1.8 million students who took the examination obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics. This marks a significant 7.69% decline in performance compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, WAEC withheld the results of 215,267 candidates due to various reported cases of examination malpractice, representing 11.92% of the total candidates. This trend raises additional concerns about the integrity and effectiveness of the current educational system.
