In a significant step towards supporting higher education in the state, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has awarded scholarships to 100 students at Wigwe University, located in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational opportunities within the region.

Wigwe University, which honors the legacy of the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Holdings, officially commenced academic activities just eight months after his tragic passing in a helicopter crash in February 2024, along with his wife Chizoba and their son Chizzy. The institution was founded to continue Dr. Wigwe’s philanthropic vision, and it stands as a testament to his dedication to nurturing future leaders in Africa.

The acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, emphasized the university’s mission to harness Africa’s potential for prosperity, stating, "We aim to create thoughtful and fearless leaders who will contribute positively to society." The scholarship program reflects this vision, offering 70% of the awards to Rivers State indigenes, while the remaining 30% is designated for non-indigenes residing in the state.
