Rivers State University (RSU) has officially launched the Centre for Water Sanitation Studies (CeWASS), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at tackling critical environmental and health challenges associated with water and sanitation. This pioneering centre, established under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Nlerum Okogbule, is poised to lead research and studies on water and sanitation across the continent.
CeWASS is primarily focused on postgraduate studies and research, with over 300 students already enrolled, underscoring the growing interest in addressing these vital issues. The establishment of this centre signifies a key milestone in RSU's strategic plan to create specialized institutes that confront pressing national and global challenges.
In her remarks, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the centre's potential to combat tropical diseases that arise from inadequate sanitation and water quality. She noted that CeWASS is expected to spearhead Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) projects while providing essential expertise in this critical area of public health.
As the first centre of its kind in Nigeria, CeWASS aims to deliver innovative research and practical solutions to water and sanitation challenges, enhancing the quality of life for communities across the region and beyond.
