SDU Students Enjoy Free Internet Wi-Fi as Vice-Chancellor Commissions SUG Digital Access Project
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, alongside members of University Management and the Students’ Union Government (SUG), commissions the free campus Wi-Fi project aimed at enhancing academic excellence and digital inclusion.
Students of Southern Delta University (SDU), Ozoro, have expressed excitement and appreciation following the commissioning of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Free Internet Wi-Fi Project, a landmark initiative designed to expand digital access and strengthen academic engagement across the university community.
The project was officially commissioned on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, in the presence of members of the University Management and student leaders.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the President of the Students’ Union Government, H.E. Sen. Comr. Oribelua Precious, explained that the initiative was conceived to address digital access challenges faced by students, reduce the financial burden associated with purchasing internet data, and support academic excellence through improved access to research and global knowledge resources.

According to the SUG President, the project aligns with the University’s vision of achieving global visibility through academic excellence by creating opportunities for students to engage in research, access educational materials, participate in virtual learning, and connect with global academic communities.
The high-capacity Starlink-enabled Free Wi-Fi Service, implemented in partnership with the University’s Directorate of ICT, has been strategically installed at five designated locations across the campus to ensure broad accessibility and effective connectivity for students. Spots location includes; University main Auditorium, faculty of Engineering, Department of computer science, ICT Complex, Faculty of Basic medical Sciences
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor commended the SUG leadership for the innovative and student-centred initiative. He encouraged students to maximize the opportunity by using the internet service responsibly and productively to support their academic development.
Prof. Awhefeada advised students against engaging in cybercrime, internet fraud, and other unethical online activities, emphasizing that the facility should be utilized for research, attending virtual lectures, completing assignments promptly, and improving overall learning outcomes while easing the cost of data acquisition.
The Students’ Union Government expressed appreciation to the University Management, the Directorate of ICT, and the entire student body for their support and active participation during the commissioning exercise.
Students have also been advised to connect only through the designated SUG Wi-Fi access points at each approved location to ensure equitable access and efficient service delivery across the university community.
