President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a significant leadership transition for Nigeria’s examination body.

Professor Aina will take over from Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose second and final tenure is set to end on July 31, 2026. The appointment signals a continued focus on digital innovation and institutional reform within the education sector.

A respected academic and systems expert, Aina brings extensive experience in examination administration, digital infrastructure, and public-sector transformation. He is expected to build on the reforms and achievements recorded during Oloyede’s administration while introducing fresh technological advancements to the board’s operations.

Born in 1986 and set to turn 40 in July, Aina will become the youngest registrar in JAMB’s history. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom before obtaining both a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

Currently a professor of computer engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aina’s relationship with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service period, where he gained early exposure to national admissions systems and institutional data management. Those experiences reportedly shaped his long-standing interest in examination reforms and systems optimisation.

Over the years, he has worked at the intersection of technology, governance, and institutional development, advising both federal and state governments on digital transition strategies, operational reforms, and systems design.

Aina has also consulted for several major examination bodies, including NECO and NABTEB, where he provided expertise in ICT systems, examination security, and digital process improvement.

His professional affiliations include membership of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

In a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed confidence in the new appointee’s ability to advance JAMB’s operations and strengthen the institution’s role in Nigeria’s education sector.

According to the statement, the president expects Professor Aina to deploy his “vast experience, knowledge and practical insight” to take the board beyond the achievements recorded under the outgoing registrar.
