Indoor Games Add Colour to FUNAAB Staff Unity Games

The 2026 Staff Unity Games of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), have continued to generate excitement across the University Community, with the commencement of the Indoor Games providing more opportunities for staff to interact, relax and strengthen camaraderie.

The Indoor Games, which commenced on August 13, 2026, had staff actively participating in Chess, Badminton, Tennis, Squash, Volleyball, Ayo Ọlọpọn, Draughts, and Ludo.

Speaking during the Games, the Director, Directorate of Sports and Wellness Centre, Dr. Samuel Olabanji. expressed delight at the impressive turnout, noting that the Chess venue was filled with staff and spectators, while the areas hosting Ayo Ọlọpọn, Draughts and Ludo also attracted considerable attention.

He attributed the enthusiasm to the opportunity the Games provide staff to temporarily step away from their routine academic and administrative responsibilities, relax and interact freely with colleagues.

The Director, therefore, commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, for providing a platform for staff to interact in a serene and comfortable environment, saying the Games had created moments of happiness and laughter while helping to ease workplace pressures.

He stressed that the Staff Unity Games were designed not merely as a competition, but as an avenue for recreation, social interaction, wellness and unity. According to him, the Games help bridge hierarchical and administrative barriers, allowing senior and junior staff to interact freely as colleagues and friends.

Dr. Olabanji added that the active participation of Professors and other senior staff alongside their colleagues demonstrated the unifying power of sports and the importance of fostering a stronger sense of community within the University.

Meanwhile, Football action continued with the quarter-finals producing exciting encounters. The College of Physical Sciences (COLPHYS) defeated the College of Veterinary Medicine (COLVET) 2–1, while the Works and Services Unit defeated DUFARMS through a penalty shootout. Earlier, the Registry had defeated the Bursary 2–0.

According to the Director, the Football competition would continue with the Semi-Finals on Monday. He disclosed that the Games were scheduled to run for two weeks, while the closing ceremony date would be confirmed in consultation with Management, considering other major University activities this week.

Dr. Olabanji stated that the Vice-Chancellor is expected to preside over the closing ceremony and present medals and certificates to deserving winners. He urged staff to embrace the Games and sustain the spirit of unity beyond the competition, stressing that the ultimate objective is to promote recreation, wellness, understanding, social interaction and a healthier, more productive workforce.
