AFUED Students Urged To Use Social Media Responsibly

Students of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo, have been advised to use social media responsibly in the course of their educational career.

This advice was given on Tuesday August 11, 2026 by a Media Expert and Ceremony Manager, Mr. Babatunde Akinremi , at a Media Submmit organized by the office of the Director of Information and Publicity, Student Union Government(SUG), AFUED in collaboration with the institution’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations, which was held at the Babatunde Ipaye lecture theatre in the University.

While speaking on the impact of digital technology in contemporary society, Akinremi observed that many young people have become overly attached to their phones, stressing that students sometimes fail to prepare adequately for examinations while relying on prayers and expecting miracles.

According to him, “a phone can be a mobile class for serious students, while it can also cause distraction for unserious students,” he, therefore, urged students to make use of social media by creating contents that helps to promote morality, inspiration and contribute positively to society. He also advised them to develop the ability to influence people positively and refrain from using leadership positions to exploit their followers.

The media expert identified three categories of social media users which he listed as including: Consumers, the Critics and Creators. According to him, consumers are those who primarily like, scroll through, and comment on posts; critics are those who constantly argue about posts and seek to impose their opinions; while creators, produce contents to teach, inspire, promote and potentially generate income.

As a way of making an informed decision, Akinremi, therefore, encouraged the students to consciously choose the category they want to belong to, in order to become responsible content creators.

Also speaking at the summit, a media influencer, Miss Fasipe Margret, advised students to carefully consider the messages they communicate to their audiences through social media.
